De SMS Bible hadden we al, maar The Brick Testament overtreft alles: het Oude en Nieuwe Testament afgebeeld in Lego! Meer dan 3000 indrukwekkende Lego-taferelen staan reeds op de website. De man achter dit project is Brendan Powell Smith, die als nicknaam The Reverend heeft, maar eigenlijk een atheïst is. Over het ontstaan van het project schrijft hij:
There I was enjoying a leisurely lunch one evening at the local Taco Bell when suddenly my bean burrito burst into flames and I heard the unmistakable voice of God. "Brendan," it said, "from this day forth you will illustrate for me my most holy of books, The Bible, completely in LEGO®."
"Surely there is someone more qualified than I for this task," I humbly replied. "For I am but a simple man with no special talent for building with plastic bricks."
"Who are you to question the will of God?" the angered voice boomed back. "Was it not I who created the world from nothing and whose hands control the destiny of mankind?
"But I'm an atheist," I protested.
"Then you are especially unqualified to question me!" came the response. "Now get to work!"
The Brick Testament is bijzonder leuk en aantrekkelijk, ook (en misschien zelfs vooral) voor niet-gelovigen. Smith zegt hierover:
On any given day I might get a letter from an atheist saying, 'Hey, your site is great; it really points out how ridiculous these Bible stories are,' and then a minister, asking, 'Can we use some images to teach Sunday school?'
Niet alle gelovigen zijn echter even enthousiast over de afbeeldingen van The Brick Testament. Dat blijkt uit de vele negatieve reacties op Amazon op een van de The Brick Testament-boeken die inmiddels is uitgekomen. Wat iemand anders dan weer doet besluiten:
My favorite part of this book is the negative feedback it has received. Just skim through them real quick and take a gander--they're hilarious! "Oh my heavens! This book depicts the Bible explicitly, and doesn't sugar coat its stories! It's therefore not for children!"
Yes, because any good Christian knows that you can't be honest about Biblical stories with children because it'll scare the *hell* out of them! Or, wait; isn't that actually the point? ;P
Is The Brick Testament nu een scherpe Bijbel-satire, of een uitstekende introductie in het Heilige Boek? Het is niet echt duidelijk. Maar het doel van het project is
to give people an increased knowledge of the contents of The Bible in a way that is fun and compelling while staying very true to the original versions.
En daar is Smith wat mij betreft absoluut in geslaagd.
